1941. The Ukrainian city of Vinnytsia is occupied by the Germans. To house a German engineer, the Nazis kill David's family. Their son Sioma is accidentally saved. Ukrainian woman Marusya hides a guy in her house. Jews are being taken out of the city en masse and executed in the woods. The police find out about Sioma, and policeman Pavlo, a former Red Army soldier, helps Marusya and Siomy escape. On the way, Marusya is killed, and Sioma manages to be transported to Romanian territory.
